Maybe I should have asked this question before lunch but does anyone know how to tell when sauerkraut has gone bad?

Sorry, no, but, man, that is funny. :)
Posted by: timsamoff on April 22, 2004 03:18 PMOf course, you can always call my dad at the store for a definitive answer, but my call is: It’s pickled. It’s hermetically sealed in steel. It’s gonna outlast every single one of us.
Not even Twinkies have that kind of staying power.
Posted by: Shepcat on April 22, 2004 04:51 PMI’m talking about kraut that has been opened and living in a sealed bowl in the fridge for some time now…
Granted, I like the “it’s pickled” angle. I guess only time will tell.

I’m afraid you’re on your own this time, brother…

Posted by: Jodi on April 22, 2004 10:05 PMSauerkraut, as it ages, gradually aquires a pleasant taste. If you open a can of saurkraut and on smelling it, believe it to be even remotely edible, then the sauerkraut has stated to go “good” and must not be eaten. Run straight to the store and get some fresh sauerkraut for the lovely “Tell me again why, if there really is free will, I am eating pickled cabbage” odor which signifies good sauerkraut.
