Happy Birthday Mac

macintosh.jpg January 24 marks the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the Macintosh computer. I remember watching the Superbowl commercial entitled "1984" 20 years ago. You can see the commercial here and vote for it in a CBS poll for the greatest TV commercial of all time. Incidentally the commercial only ran one time on television.

I'm a total Mac-geek and there are currently nine Macs of various age and origin in my house plus two iPods. All are still bootable and usable. Four are used on a daily basis. I purchased my first Mac in 1988 and never looked back. I've converted quite a few PeeCee users and lost a few Mac users from the lack of quality control that was evident in the early 90's. Gil Amelio was a schmuck and I publicly apologize again to those friends whose experience with Macs was far too brief and less than pleasurable.

So here's looking forward to the next 20 years hoping that the Mac will remain a cornerstone of rebellious creativity and cool.

Just as Andre has owned something like 16 different cars in the time that I have driven my two (a conservative estimate, incidentally), I love to note how many different Macs you’ve owned, maintained, operated, dismantled, rebuilt and enhanced in the time that I’ve owned my three.

You are truly the Victor Frankenstein of the Mac world, and I’m astonished that you’re not taking calls from Steve Jobs yet. Possibly it’s because you’ve been too busy talking me through my own fool-ass questions, such as, “Does the escape key do anything besides just sit there?” and “How do I import my address file from Grace to Hobbes?”

(Love your phonetic spelling of “PeeCee,” by the way. As a language guy, I appreciate the way it makes them seem small and petty alongside the almighty Mac.)
